NPC Competitor and Personal Trainer Kathy Laucius Talks to Directlyfitness.com

1. How did you get started with fitness?

I started in 2008. I had finally reached the point of my transformation where I felt completely satisfied. But, I knew there was one thing left to do. I wanted to the chance to compete.

I started working with a local trainer who taught me the “old school” way to train with weights. I entered my first figure competition in June 2008. I went on to compete in 4 shows that year. I won my height class at one of the shows & qualified for competition at the national level.

2. What gets you motivated?

I am easily motivated to train every single day. As a certified personal trainer, I am motivated by my clients to practice what I preach. As a mother, I am motivated by my children who I want to teach the importance of taking care of leading a healthy lifestyle. I am highly motivated by my fellow iron women who believe in their dreams.

3. What is your training philosophy?

My training philosophy is simple. If you do A (Nutrition) + B (Strength Training) + C (Cardio) you will achieve D= your desired physique. You can’t have any one of the points without the other. They all play a vital role in the final equation, i.e. your physique.

4. If you have to pick only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?

Squats: heavy weight results in a beautiful booty
Pull-Ups: Best back exercise
Deadlifts: Again, heavy makes nice cuts in your hammies

5. What is your philosophy on nutrition?

Nutrition is 80% of your success rate. The sooner you get this through your head, the quicker you will reach your goals. Good food doesn’t make you fat, bad food makes you fat. You are what you eat….pure & simple.

6. What’s your diet like?

My diet stays fairly consistent year round since I’m not competing anymore. My macronutrients are 40% protein, 30% carbs & 30% fat. I keep my calories fairly low during the week (around 1400) & will give myself a cheat day once/week. If I need to get ready for something, say a photo shoot or vacation, I like to use the zig-zag method of carbohydrate cycling. I will utilize a 3 day low/1 day high of carbohydrates. This method is excellent for tapping into stubborn fat storage.

7. What’s your take on carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are your friend, not your enemy as long as you are picking the right kinds of carbs.

8. What workout routine has worked best for you?

I still use a 5 day split of bodyparts for my weight training:
Mon: Legs
Tues: Chest/Tri
Wed: Back/Bi/Extra Hamstrings
Thurs: Shoulders/Abs
Friday: Legs

If I need an extra day of cardio, I will combine upper body or eliminate the 2nd day of legs.

9. You own physical feature you are most proud of?

I am most proud of my legs. Years ago they were my absolute worst nemesis & I have worked very hard to shape them & add muscle to them. My days of heavy squats have also helped me tremendously.

10. What supplements do you use if any? If not, why not?

My supplementation is as follows:

First thing in the morning on an empty stomach:

-CLA Extreme
-L Carnatine
-Tyrosine

With Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner:

-All essential vit’s & minerals
- Chromium Picolinate
-ALA
-Bromelain
-Milk Thistle
-HMB
-Dandelion Root

Pre-Workout:

-Arginine/Orthinine
-Tyrosine
-Kre-Alkalyn

Post-workout:

-ON Platinum Hydro Builder

11. Favorite Bodybuilders, models, or athletes?

One of my favorite athletes happens to be a good friend of mine. His name is DeWayne Malone & he is a Pro Bodybuilder with MuscleMania as well as a contest promoter. This man is the perfect mix of integrity and determination. Not only is he a family man but he is passionate about his career as well as helping others with their dreams. When I grow up, I want to be just like him.

12. Who inspires you most?

I am mostly motivated by my children.  They are the reason I want to be successful in everything I do.  My kids are so proud of me & I love that I can not only show them how to live healthy but it’s just as important to be passionate about something.

13. Favorite Quote?

This quote is actually my own…”Yeah-I’m tired & hungry, too…So What?? Get it Done!!”
